August is National Wellness Month… a timely reminder that caring for your body, mind, and spirit matters – especially after loss.

Grief is work. It touches sleep, appetite, focus, and energy. You don’t have to fix everything at once… small steps help. Try a short daily walk. Keep a regular meal and sleep routine. Write down one memory you’re grateful for each day. Sit with someone you trust… a friend, a pastor, a counselor – and say what’s hard to say alone.

Lean on rituals. Light a candle. Visit a favorite place. Create a small tribute at home with a photo, a belonging, and a note of thanks. Share stories at Sunday dinner… laughter and tears can live in the same room.

If you’re caring for others, remember to care for yourself. Rest is not selfish… it is strength. And if the weight feels heavy, it’s okay to ask for help. Our team can connect you with grief resources, support groups, and simple planning tools that bring order when life feels uncertain.

At Bennie Smith Funeral Home of Maryland, we walk beside you with compassion, practical guidance, and the reassurance that healing happens one step at a time.

Bennie Smith Funeral Home

From humble beginnings on a farm in Faceville, Georgia, Bennie Smith became a respected businessman whose standards of compassion and excellence continue to guide our work today. Bennie Smith Funeral Home of Maryland is part of one of the largest African American–owned funeral service organizations on the East Coast. In Maryland, we serve families from multiple chapels across the Eastern Shore — including Salisbury, Easton, Princess Anne, and Chestertown — with dignified funerals, cremations, memorials, and preplanning. Since 1982, we have cared for generations of Maryland families with clarity, respect, and faith. More than 40 years later, our mission remains the same. We are here to honor every life well lived and to walk beside you, every step of the way.
